Poems of Binu M. Pallippadu
Sap Green
(Translated by Binu Karunakaran)
Bamboos
dream of seeds
even as they repose
traversing the cycle
of seasons
touched by water
they tilt heads
like tortoise to
meld with earth
travel to green
in many expanses
stay there
and the feet will
get wet
eyes will
feel the nip
wind will
rub against ears
birdsong will
bewitch
the name I wrote
playfully on the field
with seeds
would rise up
clusterbloom
in five colours
On the readied floor
the name and sign
would stay awake
in fall time
We will go
to a festival of yellow
on a flame torch
Unaware
sitting on a finger nail
a seed will sprout
Djempa
(Trans
by Rash)
When
flayed,
the
inner layer of the skin
exposes
the colour of a rose.
It
cannot but rouse up a weird feeling
in
anyone close to politics.
Sometimes
it could even build up a desire
to
see a black colour emerging within
as
more and more skin was exposed.
If
so, perhaps, one didn’t have
to
kill his brother.
With
every heave, every gash,
the
blackness that blew inward,
might
have given him time to introspect.
There
are some with soft skin, who like traitors,
stay
close to the hacked organ
and
gesture to slice one more portion.
All
this comes from an old school.
Some
like a black board and alphabets drawn with chalk.
With
a rusty knife, flashing white,
with
no vendetta or animosity,
picking
up the wages for
chopping
up a body,
going
home with milk for the baby
is
the kind of politics today.
Djempa:
An African percussion. (Used here to denote violence that is part of Kerala
society now)
